Vintage PRE LATERAL Stanley No.2 Plane - FINE / SUPER SCARCE!!!
FINE CONDITION with no consequential damage of any sort, including rusting, pitting or dinging anywhere in the metal or Rosewood.  Lightly cleaned to high collector standards leaving intact a lovely dark patina on the exposed metal surfaces and the wood.  The brass has NOT been polished.  Japanning is 97% intact.  The wood retains its original finish with no cracking or splitting.  "Toolbox" dinging and scratching is on the very light side of average.  Over 1-1/2" of usable steel remains on the nicely sharpened  iron.  What a FINE specimen!!
Dating and typing early Stanley No. 2s is a difficult proposition at best.  Limited production planes such as this are notoriously hard to "type" as Stanley was understandably dedicated to using up old stock parts before applying ongoing changes.  Perhaps it is a late "Type 2" circa 1873.  There are no known "Type 3" No. 2s.  And it does not qualify as a "Type 4."  Here are the salient points.  Please analyze them (and the photos) and make your own call.  The blade is marked as in photo 6.  The chip breaker as in 7.  It has a "Type M" recessed adjustment nut with Bailey's patent dates stamped inside.  The spring under the lever cap is rectangular.  The frog is held in place by
round
headed screws.  There are no discernible casting marks - anywhere.  It sure looks like a "Type 2" to me.  (I have had other No.2 plane over the years with identical typing characteristics.)
The No. 2 was obviously not a best seller in Stanley's early days given the
extreme
difficulty
of finding Pre Lateral examples in today's old tool market.  Here is an especially early one in
