Period Notes:
The 1920's was a period of great change and innovation and with the launch of the Stanley Works in 1919 (a combination of various Stanley companies) a new logo was designed and presented to the world. A gentleman named William Hart, a distinguished contributor with Stanley for many years, retired in 1918 and passed in 1919. In a tribute, they placed the Stanley Works SW inside a heart and the field of woodworkers everywhere instantly dubbed it the Sweetheart Line. I have collected and used Stanley Sweetheart tools for many years and will be offering some from my collection for sale over the next few months as they will soon begin turning 100 years old.
The Four Square line of Household Tools
was offered as homeowners did not need the refinements required by artisans of the day. This less expensive line of tools was perhaps the most famous of the Stanley line and many were of almost similar quality of the better lines and had some of the most clever advertising of the period. People read magazines in their living rooms and Stanley teased them with the Four Square line in rich, full page advertising. Hardware stores offered envelopes with a nickel inside to purchase The Saturday Evening Post and even sealed the envelope with a Four Square stamp. At the end of the 1920's, after the stock market crashed, the 1930's would usher in an era of austerity and bleak plainness and the romance of Four Square black and red gave way to gray and the magic was no more. By 1935, the Depression was under way and the Four Square line was abandoned. World War II would follow and eventually the Stanley Handyman line would be introduced.
