This vintage Stanley No. 4 plane is the type 21 version produced in the 1970's with the cordivan (maroon) finish and natural hardwood knob and tote/handle. I am not sure of the exact production years, but I do know they were only produced in this color for a short time in the 1970's (until 1978 at the latest, as the 1979 catalog describes them returning to a black finish). 9-3/4" long with a 2" wide cutter. It is in Excellent condition with hardly any wear present, besides some very light surface rust from storage There is no damage or improper parts. The cutter is nice and sharp and does have a slight radius across the edge, which is preferred for smoothing planes as it eliminates the "plane tracks" caused by the sharp corners on square ground bevels. It will likely need honed for optimal use. These later versions have thicker castings and weigh almost a full pound more than the earlier No. 4's produced by Stanley prior to 1962. The castings are about 1/8" wider than the earlier ones as well (same 2" wide cutter). This makes it feel more like a No. 4-1/2 and results in more momentum during use. There are countless applications for a smoothing plane - even if you are primarily a power tool woodworker. This excellent No. 4 is ready for your shop!

I have a lot of common and some hard-to-find tool parts that are not listed in my store. If you are not able to find what you need, feel free to send me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. All of my listed items have been inspected and tested to provide the best possible description. In some cases, parts may be brushed off with a soft-bristled brush, such as a paint brush, to remove surface dust or debris for photos. Unless otherwise noted, parts have not been cleaned beyond this. Although most of my items sell very quickly, metal parts may contain a small layer of oil, WD-40, grease, or similar substance to preserve the item and prevent rusting while it is in inventory. ALL inventory is stored in an environment where climate and humidity are controlled to ensure each item is received in the same condition in which it is presented in the listing. Unless otherwise noted in the listing, photos are of the exact item you will receive. Every single item is listed and packaged by myself and I take pride in carefully packaging all items, regardless of purchase amount. Creating a positive experience for you, the buyer, is my top priority.
Positive feedback is left for all buyers as soon as payment is received because by paying for an item you have fulfilled your obligation in the agreement.
When applicable, I try to grade the condition of every tool and part objectively using John Walter's grading system from his "Antique & Collectible Stanley Tools" price guide as described below. This is not necessarily an industry standard for grading, and grading vocabulary will vary from collector to collector since there is some subjectivity involved (i.e. "mint" vs. "near mint"). For these reasons, I will also try to list a description of these grades in each listing in order to clarify the grade given to each item. Please refer to the details below and read the "condition" portion of this listing for the condition grading assigned to this item.
MINT: 100% of original finish remaining. No signs of wear or rust - probably never used. No problems or issues.
EXCELLENT: 95-99% of original finish remaining. Very slight wear with no rust. No problems or issues.
GOOD PLUS: 85-95% of original finish remaining. Used but well maintained. Scuffs, light wear, very little rust.
GOOD: 65-85% of original finish remaining. Moderate wear and/or rust. Minor deficiencies - owner's initials, nicks, etc.
GOOD MINUS: 50-65% of original finish remaining. Has seen hard use, but remains serviceable. Scratches, nicks, dents, cracks, chips, improper replacement parts.
FAIR: 25-50% of original finish remaining. Heavy wear and rust. Some parts are broken, missing, or improper - serious flaws.
POOR: 0-25% of original finish remaining. Pitted, abused, heavily worn. Serious damage and missing major parts.
