Description
This is the wide version scrub plane by Stanley. 1/4" wider than the 40 with a 1-1/2" cutter. Discontinued by about 1947 in favor of the No. 40 which was being made up until the early 60's. Obviously 1/4" wider didn't mean much to carpenters and woodworkers, but it means something to collectors. Collectibility aside, this would be an awesome plane to keep by the bench to quickly knock down those high spots. It's a looker; but not so precious to bring you grief if you drop it or ding it up some...
This is a later sweetheart era plane with all parts original. As with most scrub planes; they weren't babied and this one needed a little love. It's had a paint job and the handles given some new shellac. The sole got a little lapping and the rest only lightly cleaned and oiled to preserve patina. minor nicks at the mouth. There is checking at the knob base which you could easily glue up if you prefer. The blade has a decent edge but could use some fine tuning before use.
