Description
For Auction we have aStanley Bailey No. 27-1/2 Wood Bottom Fore Plane, sometimes referred to as a "transitional plane" as it had many refinements of the newer ductile iron bottom planes, but were made for the naysayers (established carpenters) who preferred a wood bottom plane. Stanley had been making iron planes since the Civil War, so I am not sure this story holds true. Some woodworkers just preferred wood bottom planes. These are a joy to use in certain applications. Made around the period from around 1893-1899 this one has the S casting on the cast frame but not the frog, which may not be original. This plane had some stress cracks from age which were properly filled and sealed. The bottom had four holes, where it was most likely used in pattern making. These were also filled and the bottom waxed. The plane iron has some pitting, from age, but is proper and long. Some of the Japanning was flaking, so it was fully re-Japanned including the lever cap. The wood is in very good condition, including the handles but the hold down barrel bolt hole is deeper than original and a little wallowed out (please see pictures) most likely from tightening and use. Items in background or rulers are to show scale and display possibilities and only the item listed is included in this sale. Please see pictures.

The Tool Collector
The fashion and use of tools are one of the traits that separate us from the other species on the planet. Oh how we marvel at the tools our ancestors used and yet my own tools await discovery by my descendants. Each drawer and cabinet will reveal a little about who I was as someone as curious as me comes along, reverently handling each item. As a carpenter and cabinetmaker, my woodworking followed hundreds of years of ancestral practice in my family in both Europe and this place we call the United States of America. I am drawn to tools both in use and collecting, reaching back through time and touching the warmth and familiarity of those who preceded me. As I hold each tool, I listen for its story.
At some point, our collections begin to overflow and unless we have a museum at our disposal, must share some of our collection, less we be labelled a hoarder. Okay, label me as such, but I am willing to share a few of my treasures with others. For this item, I use the auction format to determine what the sale price will be.
