The Land of Smiles (German: Das Land des Lächelns) is a 1952 West German operetta film directed by Hans Deppe and Erik Ode and starring Mártha Eggerth, Jan Kiepura and Walter Müller. It is an adaptation of the operetta The Land of Smiles composed by Franz Lehár which had previously been made into a 1930 film starring Richard Tauber.[1]
Story line
Lissy Licht, an acclaimed opera singer, comes to visit her uncle, Professor Ferdinand Licht in Vienna, and falls in love with one of his pupils, a charming Asian. What SHE does not know is that Sou is the Prince of Javora and what HE does not know is that she is a world famous singer. After singing together on stage and discovering each other's personalities, they decide to marry. Lissy follows Sou to Javora but despite the love of her husband, the birth of Chrysanthème, their little girl, and the beauty of her host country, she can't be happy. Their couple will not resist the assaults of a scheming chancellor, the constraints of the reason of state and Lissy's growing homesickness
