    Description

    Original 1960 re-release poster for the classic 1954 film "On the Waterfront", directed by Elia Kazan and written by Budd Schulberg and starring Marlon Brando in landmark performance. The film won 8 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Brando. It was such a success that it was re-released a number of times throughout the world. This poster dates from the 1960 release in Italy and features dramatic, colorful artwork by Luigi Martinati.
    There are some classic American films that are poorly represented by their U.S. posters, and this film is one of them. The U.S. 1 Sheet features an odd, disappointing portrait of Brando - the coloring is such that it looks as if he is wearing makeup. The Italian posters, on the other hand, are intense and dramatic - much better than the American paper.
    Poster measures 39x55 inches and condition is very good. Folded as issued, there is a studio-issued "snipe" along the bottom of the poster. This is essentially a sticker or piece of paper that was attached to the poster in cases where the title or credits were revised after the poster was printed. In this case, it was the credits for Kazan and producer Sam Spiegel at the very bottom of the poster. As the credits were contractual and a legal issue, all posters would have been required to attach the snipe before being displayed or even sent to theaters. Apart from the snipe, there is some mild darkening and wear along the folds and borders (typical of Italian posters of this vintage), a bit of fold separation and some creasing. Overall it displays very nicely with vivid color.
