This Craftsman No. 5CBB Jack Plane is in good condition, but there are some issue (noted below). It is a similar size to a Stanley No. 5 jack plane. It was made by Millers Falls between 1945 and 1951. The knob and tote are very nice with the tote having 95% of the original decal present. The lever cap has the blue background in the Craftsman trademark circle, but only about 40% of that original blue finish remains within the circle. The lever cap is functionally sound with no damage. The cutter is good with only 1/8" worn away from use and sharpening - a full 1-3/4" to 1-7/8" of useable iron left. While it does have a decent primary bevel established, it will need sharpened and honed before using. The cap iron is good as well, although it looks like it might have seen a wire wheel. The frog is good and is the classic Millers Falls design - some wear but no damage. The body is sound with no damage, but does have pitting and texture on the sole. There are 3-4 small areas on the sole that have moderate pitting, but this is all located in areas that should not affect performance. The texture on the sole is such that it can be removed with relative ease through lapping. A very solid user as is with some quality parts. Even power tool wood workers can benefit from the versatility of a jack plane. This one is ready for its new place in your shop!
Visit my store for more antique and vintage tools and tool parts. My items are carefully packaged and shipped out on the same day payment is received, as long as payment is received by 3 pm Central Time (subject to post office hours, holidays, weekends, etc.)
I have a lot of common and some hard-to-find tool parts that are not listed in my store. If you are not able to find what you need, feel free to send me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. All of my listed items have been inspected and tested to provide the best possible description. In some cases, parts may be brushed off with a soft-bristled brush, such as a paint brush, to remove surface dust or debris for photos. Unless otherwise noted, parts have not been cleaned beyond this. Although most of my items sell very quickly, metal parts may contain a small layer of oil, WD-40, grease, or similar substance to preserve the item and prevent rusting while it is in inventory. ALL inventory is stored in an environment where climate and humidity are controlled to ensure each item is received in the same condition in which it is presented in the listing. Unless otherwise noted in the listing, photos are of the exact item you will receive. Every single item is listed and packaged by myself and I take pride in carefully packaging all items, regardless of purchase amount. Creating a positive experience for you, the buyer, is my top priority.
Positive feedback is left for all buyers as soon as payment is received because by paying for an item you have fulfilled your obligation in the agreement.
When applicable, I try to grade the condition of every tool and part objectively using John Walter's grading system from his "Antique & Collectible Stanley Tools" price guide as described below. This is not necessarily an industry standard for grading, and grading vocabulary will vary from collector to collector since there is some subjectivity involved (i.e. "mint" vs. "near mint"). For these reasons, I will also try to list a description of these grades in each listing in order to clarify the grade given to each item. Please refer to the details below and read the "condition" portion of this listing for the condition grading assigned to this item.
MINT: 100% of original finish remaining. No signs of wear or rust - probably never used. No problems or issues.
EXCELLENT: 95-99% of original finish remaining. Very slight wear with no rust. No problems or issues.
GOOD PLUS: 85-95% of original finish remaining. Used but well maintained. Scuffs, light wear, very little rust.
GOOD: 65-85% of original finish remaining. Moderate wear and/or rust. Minor deficiencies - owner's initials, nicks, etc.
GOOD MINUS: 50-65% of original finish remaining. Has seen hard use, but remains serviceable. Scratches, nicks, dents, cracks, chips, improper replacement parts.
FAIR: 25-50% of original finish remaining. Heavy wear and rust. Some parts are broken, missing, or improper - serious flaws.
POOR: 0-25% of original finish remaining. Pitted, abused, heavily worn. Serious damage and missing major parts.
