    Antique 9-3/8" Complex Molding Plane
    J. Vinall : Cleveland, Ohio
    Length: 9-3/8".
    Beech
    Toe is stamped "J. VINALL, OHIO, CLEVELAND".
    Heel is stamped "4/8"
    Blade width: 1-1/2"
    Blade shaft is marked W. BUTCHER
    Condition:
    Missing a rear section of boxing. Boxwood section present between mouth and heel is loose. Please see all photos and additional/full condition notes above.

    John J. Vinall
    (b. May 6, 1818 in Manchester, England, D. Jan. 5, 1874 in Plymouth, Marshall Co. IN) arrived in American on Apr 9, 1832, in New York. John was listed as a planemaker in Cleveland OH from 1842-53. An Ad of Aug. 18, 1842 states: Dissolution, the copartnership heretofore existing under the firm of Marble & Vinall has been this day mutually dissolved. The business of the above firm will be carried out at the old stand on Seneca Street, opposite the Commercial House by Cutler & Vinall." John Vinall advertised that he made cooper's tools, did job work such as sawing, turning, or anything that steam can be applied to," and sold wholesale and retail." ~ page 386 of A Guide to the Makers of American Wooden Planes (Fifth Edition, Thomas Elliott). This maker mark matches the A imprint found in GAWP5th.  Both J. Vinall / J. J. Vinall imprints have a rarity rating of2
