A FOUNDER'S GRADE "TYPE 4" TRANSITIONAL SMOOTHING PLANE, No. 21, by STANLEY. This example of the smallest size transitional plane made by Stanley is in unused, original hardware store condition. It is marked with the early "eagle" trademark on the toe, but not the product number. It has the solid cast iron cap and solid brass adjusting screw marked with the Bailey's Patent information. The cutting iron is marked with the "football" shaped L. Bailey's Patent 1867 logo. Both the cast iron and wooden components of this miraculously preserved plane retain fully 99% of their original black japan and lacquer finishes. This is the finest Stanley transitional plane that we have been privileged to offer for sale. Simply a great Stanley "no. 2" size transitional plane in perfect collector quality condition.
