Description
Early Siegley Bench Plane, “No. 5” Lever Cap with Brass Thumbscrew, Pre Stanley, c.1895-1900Since these early Siegley planes are so rare, there is not a whole lot of “type study” dating info for them like there is for Stanley. In addition to the fact that they were produced for a very short period of time, there was some intermingling of manufacturing with Hahn and Stanley.
To add to the confusion, the original Siegleys didn’t have the name cast on the body, but when Stanley was producing them, they did cast the Siegley name on the body. (like casting the Bailey name, I suppose.) Anyway, the pictures are the best source to date the plane. I would guess mid to late 1890’s.
The lever cap and the blade are good indicators of the vintage. The lever cap has the bold “No. 5” cast into it, with a pair of adjusting screws, and an unmarked brass thumbscrew to secure the blade. The Stanley version lever cap has no text, just a checkered texture, and a steel thumbscrew. This plane body also has “No 5” cast into it in front of the blade.
The blade has a long vertical slot used for lateral adjustment, horizontal slots on the rear to engage the depth adjuster yoke, and has the Siegley logo stamped at the top. Also, the depth adjustment yoke is a two piece assembly, not a one piece casting. I haven't seen any photos of this style frog casting.
The sole is corrugated, but the upper body surface is not. It measures 14 inches long by 2.25 inches wide.
This plane does have some problems. The rear handle (with proper gunstock checkering on the sides) is cracked at the top. The front knob has an age check on the side. It is missing the brass adjuster nut. It has the proper Siegley round logo stamped on the blade, but the stamping is faint. A proper stamp says “Siegleys Pat. XXX”. (date)
