    Description

    I
bought the rough casting of the body a while back. Wasn’t sure what to make with it so it sat for about a year. I don’t have a clue who made the casting or how old it is. I have been asked why make a No2 sized scrub plane? Well because that’s what I had. The mouth was too large to make a smooth plane, and it doesn’t have any way to adjust the blade forward in the mouth, so it’s an ideal candidate for a scrub plane. Over all it 7 1/4” long, 1 11/16” wide 4 1/4” talk to the top of the tote. The iron is 1 5/16” wide and about 5 1/2” long. The body is thick bronze. The walnut infill is 80 year old Black Walnut that was cut down in about 1944 on my great grandfather farm by WW2 German POW’s. There was a camp in Anna, Illinois that would send out the prisoners to local farms and have them cut trees, clear fields ect... I can remember by great grandmother saying that was the first time she had ever heard a chain saw, and that she would take them lemonade because it was during the summer and very hot. Any way back to the plane. The iron is 3/16 O-1 tool steel, ground with a 8” radius on the edge. The back has been lapped flat and the edge honed with a 3,000 grit water stone. The lever cap is solid 1/4” brass, with a stainless steel set screw. The knob has a mahogany dowel that sets it into the front infill. The tote is set into a mortise. Both have been finished with Boiled Linseed Oil and Beez Wax. The edges of the sole have been relieved and waxed. The little fella is heavy, and works pretty good. Not much to setting these up so if you have any questions feel free to ask.
