    Description

    Here we have an
Antique Rosewood Infilled Iron Smooth Plane, Brass Lever Cap, ASH Cutting Iron.
There is no maker's name on the plane but the cutting iron is marked
    WILLIAM ASH & Co.
    This company
operated from about 1822 - 1845, on Norfolk Lane, Sheffield, England.  The William Ash& Co. listings indicate that they were successors to Roberts & Ash, indicating William Ash was likely one of the partners in that edge tool making firm, operating from about 1814 to 1817. They manufactured many types of 'edge' tools such as chisels, plane irons, etc. The
    plane
body sides, sole and mouth are in very good condition with a few minor nicks, dings and corrosion marks.
    The sole is 9-1/4” L x 2-5/8”W.
This 'over-stuffed' type of infill appears to be Rosewood, but could be Mahogany.  The front infill knob in very good 'used' condition.
The large rear infill that included the Tote is also in very good condition with minor dings in the surface and some ‘nibbles’ off of the tote horn spur. T
here are No cracks in the infill.
The plane has a very nice brass lever cap with a finely turned tightening knob with a knurled edge.
The plane is fitted with a very good 2
    -3/16
    " wide '
    Dble. Cutting iron set'
    by
    Wm. Ash & Co.
(see above). The cutter is sharp and mates very nicely with the front of the mouth for a 'tight mouth'.  There is an owner stamp on
both sides of the rear infill
    . This is a
    n
    ice heavy plane at
    almost 4
-1/2 lbs. No cracks, breaks or repairs.
