Description
Here we have anAntique E. C. STEARNS No. 13 Universal 'Flexible Sole' Spoke Shave (Coe Patent).
This is the Herbert Coe March 27, 1900 Pat. No. 646,262 for his flexible sole spoke shave. He apparently sold the patent rights to E. C. STEARNS who manufactured it as No. 13 "Stearns Universal Spoke Shave". Edward C. Stearns started his tool manufacturing business in Syracuse. NY in 1877. They were considered to be hardware manufactures but also were iron forgers and machinists, which led to the manufacture of small iron tools such as spoke shaves. This 'Showy' shave has an 'Ornate' lever cap with raised Brass lettering and decorations that include the company info and the patent date. This cap is used to adjust the opening for the shave mouth. This shave is in very good 'used tool', and working condition. It has the double cutting iron. The flexible sole has no pitting and also works as it should (see pics). Original japanning is at approx. 50%. No cracks, breaks or repairs. No owner marks.
An Great example for your collection !!
