    Description:
This sale is for the Louis Hardt 1893 Patent Smooth Plane  pictured.  It is in Good + to Fine condition. No structural issues or damage. Well over 90%  of the original japanning.  All proper parts and markings.
Hardt patent planes are pretty rare. They also have the distinction of being the only plane from California that was  granted a patent. The patent was issued in 1893.  Very few  Hardt planes, in any size, have ever turned up.  Roger Smith in his book on Patented planes estimated that approx. 7 had been found  up to that time. Few others have turned up since then.
The last 2 pics are of two planes and a drawknife marked Hardt that were found  in  California recently. These 3 Hardt tools turned up not far from Yuba  City where Lewis Hardt resided when he was granted his patent.
The drawknife is marked Otis Hardt. A Google search turned  up an Otis Hart from the right time  period living in Nevada City which is not far away from Yuba City. Given the  Hardt name twice on the drawknife one can assume these planes belonged to a  relative or family member related to Lewis.  A tool researchers dream and a story that  wants to be filled out.
All 3 Hardt pieces  are being offered in different auctions. I also have them listed individually  and as a lot on my site  patented-antiques if you want  all three. An opportunity to own a rare piece of California tool history that will probably not repeat itself.
Pics tell the story. Please look at all the pics to see the details and condition. What you see is what you get. Bid it to own it!!
